SHAKING UP THE ROUTINE – NEAR SACRAMENTO, CA

Free time has been scarce lately, and it shows on my blog, eh?

Good genes (or at least long-lived genes) run in my family, and Odel and I are spending a couple weeks with the super-seniors before we settle down at Cal-Expo RV Park in Sacramento for most of the month of November.  We’ve spent a good portion of this week helping my soon-to-be 89 year old aunt move into an independent living apartment, while house- and cat-sitting for Sydney and Frank, my sister and BIL.  And we’re only about 5 miles from my just-edging-past 85 year old parents, so are trying to visit with them, too.

Gotta’ say, I am impressed with my aunt’s new living arrangement: small, private apartment in a “retirement” complex geared to helping seniors remain independent while providing all kinds of services to make their lives easier, safer, and more enjoyable – 3 meals a day in a dining room with table service, shuttle bus for those who don’t drive, activity room, library, daily checks on residents (very unobtrusive), lovely grounds and flower gardens, field trips… and very friendly staff and residents.  It appears to be an excellent move for her.

We won’t be traveling again until after Thanksgiving – we pack the month of November full of family visits, medical visits, and doing all those chores on the “wait until we get to Sacramento” list, most of which is focused on repairs to our Jeep this year.  And visiting old friends!

Now, I’m off to pick up Aunt Dorothy and teach her how to drive here to my sister’s house.  Later, readers.

  1. It's a nice feeling to have our older relatives settled in a nice safe fun environment. All too soon that's going to be us. Be sure to take a lot of time to enjoy your family amidst all the other things that need to be done.

  3. I am sure it gives you a great sense of peace knowing she will be in a great place and taken care of.
Hope you two get all your "to do" list done in Sacramento.

  4. I always say, I want to do what Laurie and Odell are doing. And I've gone and done it without even realizing it. Granted I'm on the other side of the country but what's a small detail like that. We are also in the 'when we get back to Charlottesville we'll take care of that' month. Is it just the 4 of us or do lots of RVers pick November as the month to do doctor, dentist, optomitrist, car repairs etc etc.

Looks like we can read about each others to do list accomplishments. LOL Although my family senior seniors are all in Florida.

  8. Hey - we're tucked in at Cal-Expo in site 229 (with a tree!) - it's quiet and fairly empty. If you get free time, it'd be fun to get together!

Wish you were here. What's your plans for this winter? We're probably going to spend most of it in AZ with a couple of side trips to Rocky Point Mexico. Hope to run into you guys this winter.

  12. Laurie, which community did your aunt pick? I have had friends ask if I knew any good ones in the area, so I am always open to new input. See you soon!

  13. Sounds like great family time! We're heading to Sac in a week but usually stay at the Carmichael Elks. It's closer to family in Citrus Heights. Will check out Cal-Expo for future. Enjoy your stay!

  16. Hi, Mary (and others): we're still here in Sacramento, visiting with and helping out the super-seniors, doing our own medical stuff, and generally taking care of business. Our microwave died, our Jeep quit locking, Odel flew to D.C. for a visit with his daughter... just stuff like that that is keeping us busy and stationary. We'll be heading out on the road again early in December.
